A third-generation saxophonist - Greg grew up in a musical family in Danbury, Connecticut and began studying the saxophone at a young age with his father, accomplished woodwind player and music educator, Jim LaPine. At the collegiate level, Greg had the great fortune of studying with world renowned saxophonists, Jimmy Greene and Dan Goble, at Western Connecticut State University. Over the last ten years of engaging with a diverse array of musical styles, situations, and opportunities, Greg has gone on to tour, compose, arrange ,and record with internationally acclaimed artists, all the while developing a deep instrumental and compositional voice of his own.
A leader with a passion for community- Now based in NYC, Greg leads his own ensembles, including the Greg LaPine Chordless Quartet, an improvisation-centered, acoustic jazz ensemble, as well as Magic Dub: a reggae-jazz crossover group that emphasizes deep groove and thoughtful vocal selections. Greg is also a core member of the Secular Music Group, with whom he released a debut album in June of 2024, entitled SMG Vol. 1 on Love All Day Records. The ensemble seeks to simultaneously explore the realms of the sensual, spiritual, and psychedelic through music, and features compositions and improvisations from Greg and the other members that transcend genre and idiom. Additionally, Greg is a co-founder of the improvised music collective, Picture of Now, established in 2019 with guitarist and sonic texturalist, Ted Morcaldi (fellow SMG member). Music from Picture of Now as well as Greg’s Alternative Rock songwriting project QuietGregory, and more collaborations between Greg and Ted Morcaldi, can be accessed through Fourth Moment Records, their collaborative record label established in 2021.
An active member of the NYC music scene - In addition to his projects as a leader or founder, Greg can be seen performing regularly in New York City and the tri-state area with local projects such as the NYC Ska Orchestra, Liquid Love, SunDub among others. Greg has performed across the United States and internationally, recorded and composed for artist including Jason Mraz, Shaggy & Sting, Carrtoons, The Easy Star Allstars, Mephiskapheles, and more..
